We have finally hit the sweet spot of fall in Alabama where the mornings are crisp and cool, but the afternoons are still bright and sunny. As the temperatures continue to drop, this transitional season can be tricky for fashion and makes deciding what to wear each morning a bit more challenging. Enter the season of layering!

Finding a great coat to layer on top of basic looks can elevate your daily style instantly. In the past, I have usually gravitated towards solid coats because of their obviously versatile and timeless qualities, but this season I have been drawn to all the printed things. When blogger Arielle Charnas of Something Navy launched her collection at Nordstrom a few weeks back, this coat was the first item to go into my cart! The gray and black checkered print caught my eye, and I immediately started thinking up a million looks to pair it with throughout the fall and winter. Even though the coat is printed, the neutral colors lend it to being worn with so many colors and outfits. I think it would look great dressed up with a chic all black and white look, or over a little black dress with over the knee boots, or worn casually with white jeans and a colorful sweater. It’s definitely a work to weekend piece that can be styled tons of ways.

For today’s look, I paired the coat with my coziest pink sweater (from last season, this season’s version here, less $$ style here), black jeans, and white booties (more white booties here). To continue with the black, white, gray, and blush color scheme, I accessorized the look with these white earrings and this gray bag. One thing to note about this coat: it’s less of a heavy coat and more of a topper, which is perfect for fall in the south where our temperatures aren’t too extreme. However if you live somewhere with cooler temperatures, this coat from the Something Navy Collection may be a better pick for you! See more of my Something Navy Collection picks below.

p.s. Wore this outfit at the beautiful (& newly renovated) Grand Hotel in Point Clear, Alabama. Read more about my recent visit here!
